the film

The film follows two viticulturists and a wine maker through their annual cycle of work at the vineyard and winery. All three face adversities and challenges, the result not only of the current economic juncture but also of pressures exerted by their social environment.

Santorini’s extraordinary vineyard, the oldest in Europe, is currently being buried in concrete due to the unregulated development of the local tourist industry. Viticulturists and wine makers, the local wine union and administration, workers and citizens compose a fragile system and a reflection of Greek society under a profound economic, political, cultural and moral crisis. Creativity and productivity are pitted against easy profit and irresponsible entrepreneurship that damage the identity of the island.

The main characters shape the narrative through personal moments and thoughts about their life, work and relationship with God. Rather than offering an indictment, the film investigates and focuses on the underlying causes of the problem and on individual psychology with poetry and humour.  Its narrative structure reflects the different phases of the annual cycle of viticulture.
